Splint therapy is the first and most crucial stage in treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. A custom-made splint positions the lower jaw in a physiological alignment, relaxes the chewing muscles, and relieves pressure on the joint. This alleviates symptoms and provides the dentist with information for the subsequent treatment plan.
After the condition stabilizes with the splint, the dentist analyzes the new jaw position and determines the subsequent plan: orthodontic treatment to solidify it, selective grinding, or prosthetic restoration of the dental arch. Splint therapy is not the final outcome, but rather a precise answer to the question of where the correct jaw position truly lies.
