Root canal treatment saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Removing the infected pulp, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the canals, and then sealing them hermetically is a procedure after which the tooth remains functional for years to come.
After endodontic treatment, the tooth becomes more brittle due to the absence of pulp and partial tissue loss. To protect against fracture, most teeth require a crown after root canal treatment. A follow-up X-ray after 6–12 months confirms complete healing of the tissues around the root and the absence of residual inflammation.
