What is periodontitis and how is it treated?

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory lesion around the root apex that may be asymptomatic for years. Treatment involves thorough antiseptic cleaning of the root canals and a series of visits to monitor healing. When properly treated, this lesion is completely eliminated, and the bone regenerates.

Treatment stages:

access and shaping of the root canals
antiseptic irrigation to eliminate infection
temporary filling with medication
follow-up visits to monitor the inflammatory process
permanent filling of the canals

When treatment is needed:

acute or chronic pain when pressing on the tooth
gum swelling or a purulent fistula
tooth discoloration with a filling or crown
a cyst or granuloma detected on an X-ray

Post-treatment control and prognosis

Radiographic control at 3 and 6 months shows the healing progress of the tissues around the root. Reduction or disappearance of the lesion on the X-ray is a criterion for successful treatment. If the therapeutic approach is unsuccessful, root-end resection (apicoectomy) is considered as the next step to save the tooth.
