What is a gnathological consultation

A gnathologist evaluates the masticatory system as a whole: the joint, muscles, bite, and teeth in their interconnectedness. Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction — pain in the temples, clicking in the joint, tooth wear — are often related, and a gnathologist identifies the root cause rather than just treating individual symptoms.

What the consultation includes:

collection of complaints and medical history
palpation of masticatory muscles and TMJ
assessment of mouth opening and its symmetry
analysis of CT or MRI scans of the joint, if available
development of a treatment plan

Symptoms requiring a gnathologist:

clicking or popping in the joint when opening the mouth
pain in the temples, jaw, or ear
limited or painful mouth opening
morning headaches or neck pain
tooth wear or chipping without apparent cause
